BUDDING internet designers have competed to create their own web pages.
Pupils of Crossley Heath School, Halifax, used the school's digital environment, to try to compete the most innovative and inspiring personal web pages.

A total of 72 of them and 10 staff members entered the competition to win an iPod Nano.

They designed pages about themselves and their interests, and added pictures and music.

Frog, the Halifax-based company that provides the school's virtual learning environment, chose the winner from a shortlist of 10 finalists – Sam Booth, Michael Craig, Siobhan Spencer, Jess Kaye, Daniel Spedding, Nathan Handley, Elizabeth Toole, Tommy Li, Rosie McDonnell and Harriet Warbrick.

They taught themselves to use the software and had to think about how to lay out pages to make them user-friendly.

The winner was 14-year-old Harriet, of Skircoat Green, Halifax.

Ginny Hobson, client services manager for Frog, said: "It was a very hard decision to make, but we chose Harriet's page because it was bright and colourful. She pulled in lots of types of pictures and writing and put a lot of effort in."

Year 10 student Harriet said: "I was surprised to win because there was a lot of competition.

"I wanted to include information about me and pictures of me and my friends. I put on pop music, like McFly, and about my interests – singing, acting and my radio show."

Another lucky winner was Lucy Stones of Year 7, who won another Nano in a draw from all the entries.

Gareth Davies, managing director of Frog said: "We are so pleased that Frog is enabling Crossley Heath School to engage with all levels of their community. We enjoyed judging the creative talent of the school and meeting the 10 finalists."

The school's IT manager Jonathan Lees said: "We wanted to create a MySpace style area and enhance the learning experience of our students.

"We are also furthering our quest to reduce the school's carbon footprint. The iPod Nanos have been purchased using funds from recycling the school's printer cartridges – a great school effort," he said.
