HALIFAX loose forward Shad Royston stormed to the top of the National League try scoring charts last weekend - and he intends to stay there.
Royston's hat trick in the 40-30 victory at Widnes took his tally to 20 in all competitions, equalling his 2007 total with nine league games still remaining.

National League Two duo James Nixon (Barrow) and Stewart Sanderson (Gateshead) are next on 18, with Salford's Paul White (17) the only other National League One player in the top 10.

And Royston, who has switched from full back to 13 with devastating effect, is confident of continuing in the same vein over the second half of the year.

"I am happy with the tries I am scoring and it was good to get another hat trick on Sunday," admitted the Australian, who paid tribute to the influence of new playmakers Ben Black and Thomas Coyle, as well as on-fire skipper Sean Penkywicz.

"The last few weeks we haven't really had a half back on the right and I have been a bit out of the game really.

"It was good to have someone back on that side again to set some tries up.

"Coyle went really well for his first and I know Blacky from back home and he is going to be good for us.

"It was a joy to play outside them, and that's no disrespect to the guys who have been out there the last few weeks.

"And Penkywicz is a massive player for our team.

"He's only a little fella but he has such a big influence.

"He is so quick out of dummy half and they just couldn't live with him.

"I am on 20 now and you're always looking to top the ladder if you can.

"Top try scorer in the National Leagues would be nice, I think."

Royston looks well place to break the 30 mark now, although the former Cronulla back was clearly reluctant to admit it.

"I would like to break 30, but I don't like to set targets really," he said.

"Tries come off the back of a lot of work from other guys in the team and without that you won't score many.

"I'll just trying to get as many as I can."
