Viennese Operetta, with its exotic settings and scores built around dance rhythms, is all about escapism.
A starry backdrop and enthusiastic Opera Cafe owner Mark Langley introducing the music recreated the nostalgia and romance of 19th century Vienna.
Johann Strauss II and his successor Franz Lehar were the masters of this genre, and selections from Die Fleder-maus and The Merry Widow formed the mainstay of the programme.
Under guest conductor Alistair Lilley's baton, the British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra soon got into its stride.
Of the three soloists, Andrew Forbes Lane shone with his unforced, expressive tenor, clear diction and characterisation. Soprano Marilyn Hill Smith and baritone Jeremy Peaker also sang well though their more-mannered delivery made their words harder to follow.
