THE sounds of morris dancers, music and mummers filled the streets as the Rushcart rolled through Calderdale.
The two-day Rushbearing festival – now in its 32nd year – saw 60 men pull the decorated cart for 10 miles across Sowerby Bridge, Warley, Triangle, Sowerby and Ripponden to celebrate the centuries-old tradition.

Spectators enjoyed performances from dancers from across the country as well as music and a mummers play as the cart stopped at churches to present rushes and pubs for refreshments.

John Coupe, chairman of the Rushbearing Association, said: "We've had the longest procession ever this year and some particularly good dancing teams.

"It's an unusual event. There's only three other areas I know of that hold it."

Phillip Whitaker, from Sowerby Bridge, has been involved in the festival since it started.

He agreed to help pull the cart as a scout leader when he was 22 and now several members of his family take part. His son Ian, 24, said: "It's a tradition that gets passed down through the generations. I've been involved since I was little."

Hellfire,

This is an old out dated pagan festival that should be banned.
It held the traffic up and coursed chaos.

Yeah - lets ban tradition.

If Hellfire took the trouble to check facts (perhaps by reading the festival programme)it would be clear that not only did Rushbearing start by the cleaning and replacing the flooring for churches but also that today the rushbearers raise a lot of money to help maintain today's churches - hardly pagan.

Why did the morris dancers and the mummers have to close off the car park at sowerby bridge market, thus stopping motorists getting in and out of the car park.

Did the orgainsers of this festival actually apply to Calderdale Council and the Car Parking Office for official permission to close off this car park?

Well there are some miseries posting today - whats wrong with a bit of tradition and colour, to brighten up our dull lives? I suppose all you motorists who were held up were all rushing home to sit alone and watch TV or something....

It's a bit sad when people are complaining about been held up for a bit for something that happens once a year and closes off the road for what? 2 hours?
Maybe they should have joined in and had a little bit of fun in their lives!

Chigley, I so agree with you. Miserable gits. If people do not want to get stuck in the Rushbearing traffic then read the programme and then you would know what time to avoid certain area's. There has been enough advertisements about. I think it is great that all the community get together. I was there, Sowerby Bridge was packed, the weather held out and every one had a bril time. Keep it up.

Typical car driving whingers.

Maybe next year the council ought to introduce a charge for motorists who think they own the place, for driving through.

If any policemen of road safety campaigners are readig, then you ought to take a look at Sowerby Bridge motorists driving through Wharf Street; every morning, without a doubt you will snare motorists who choose to ignorantly flout the law by driving and using mobiles, and the amount of motorists applying make up whilst driving never ceases to amaze me. And as for thos 4 * 4 who stop on top of the zebra crossings...

And they ought to charge for the school run too. In my day I'd walk or get a bus to school.
