A COUPLE who want to get married in what they say is "Calderdale's most beautiful wedding venue" are organising a petition to save its marquee.
Calderdale Council has taken enforcement action against Casa Del Lago, Elland Road, Brighouse, over a marquee, which it says breaks planning rules.
Owner Jack McDaid has appealed against the decision and a planning inquiry is due to take place in January.
Now Keith Mulcahy and fiancee Eileen Godfrey, both 45, of Holywell Green, are collecting signatures from people in support of the business.
The couple, who have been engaged for seven months, want to organise their big day at Casa but cannot fix a date because of the question mark looming over the 330-square metre tent.
The council say is not a temporary structure because it is used for more than 28 days a year and is out of keeping with the idyllic scenery.
Mr McDaid said the marquee was not out of place and brought people to the area.
He also says it would only be used for 28 days a year. The furore began when he asked the council if he could leave the marquee up for a function taking place just days after another, instead of going through the laborious task of dismantling the tent in between.
Mr Mulcahy said: "We believe this is one of the most beautiful places in Calderdale.
"It brings joy to thousands of people and, in our opinion, it is simply unbeatable in the region." The pair believe they would have to travel to the Lake District or abroad to find somewhere to equal Casa.
"We are so appalled that we are organising a petition against the council's killjoy intentions. We are sure lots of people feel the same way.
"I can't understand it. Some-one comes along and builds up a successful building and the council want to dismantle it."
Mr McDaid said: "The support for us is very encouraging. I am very grateful to Mr Mulcahy and Miss Godfrey."
Anne Markwell, of Calderdale Council's planning enforcement team, said an enforcement notice was serv-ed for breach of planning control, which has been appealed.
"The matter will now be determined by the Planning Inspectorate", she said.
