Reins tackle road danger: Wrist straps make school run safer

TODDLERS in danger of running into busy roads can now be safely reined in thanks to new wrist straps.
More than 500 Halifax youngsters have been given the wrist straps, which sell for £3.99 and are similar to traditional reins, to encourage a safer walk to school.
Youngsters at Mixenden Children's Centre at Ash Green Primary School, Halifax, were the first to try them out.
Now Sure Start North Halifax will begin distributing the potentially life-saving straps to other young pupils.
The reins will come with safety advice for children and parents prepared by Calderdale Council's road safety section.
Susan Davies foundation stage manager, at Mixenden Children's Centre, said: "I think for the younger children they are a great idea.
"It encourages parents to take responsibility for their children when they are out on the roads. Parents can now hold their hand and have the extra added security of the straps too.
"We use them on school trips."
Last year eight pre-school children were injured on Calderdale's roads.
Calderdale councillor David Kirton (Con, Hipperholme and Lightcliffe), the council's portfolio holder for road safety, said: "Every parent's worst nightmare is that their child breaks away and runs into the road.
"I am therefore delighted that our road safety section and Sure Start have worked together to produce this really worthwhile initiative."
Parents and carers are encouraged to teach their children about roads from an early age. They can start by counting cars and recognising colours.
Then parents are advised to teach youngsters the basics of the Green Cross Code, such as stop, look and listen.
