Heavy rain puts stop to weekend events

HEAVY rain put a stop to a number of weekend fun events in Calderdale.
Waterlogged fields at Manor Heath, Halifax, meant the RSPCA K9 Party in the Park had to be cancelled.

"The park is already quite slippery. We are extremely disappointed," said Halifax RSPCA's Kath Airey.

And the 18th Warley Scouts were counting the cost of the flooding. They had been planning to sell burgers on a field, off Shaw Lane, Norland, during the scarecrow festival, but it was so flooded the committee opted not to use it. The money would have been used to fund a Scout trip to Switzerland.

Organisers of the fourth Eastwood Festival decided to cancel after flood warnings on the River Calder were issued. Organiser Tilly Chappell said: "There was really no other option than to cancel. We are gutted because this year was our biggest yet and it has taken a lot of organising."

She said the free festival would return in 2009.

Sports events were also hit, with waterlogged pitches leading to match cancellations.

The Calder at Mytholmroyd also burst its banks. On Saturday, the upper Calder Valley suffered with some flooding in Todmorden's Bridgeholme Cricket Club.

More rain is forecast for Wednesday.

He only lost because somebody hit him.

Yes, somebody just got into the ring and hit him, knocking him down twice. What amazes me is that nobody did anything. Amir Khan is supposed to jump around the ring waving the Union Jack, not get hit by dodgy looking foreigners.
