Funeral of care home victim Lily
THE funeral takes place today of 83-year-old Lily Leatham, whose treatment in a Calderdale care home prompted a national debate on elderly neglect.
After she was admitted to Laurel Bank Nursing Home, at Holmfield, Halifax, in 2002, Mrs Leatham lost so much weight that her family did not recognise her and she had to be admitted to hospital suffering from malnutrition.
Last year, at a hearing by the Midwifery Council Professional Conduct Committee, a matron at the home was found guilty of neglect and given a five-year caution - but allowed to continue nursing after admitting misconduct.
A deputy matron was found guilty of three charges of misconduct and struck off.
Mrs Leatham, a widow, recovered from her ordeal and spent her later years at the Ghyll Royd Nursing Home at Guiseley, near Leeds.
She leaves two daughters, Marilyn and Diane, three grand children and a great grand-daughter.
