A FAMILY-of-nine have been told they are lucky to be alive after a fire ravaged their home this morning.
The huge blaze began at 8.15am at Newstead Terrace, Halifax, and the terrified family, including a baby and five young children, made it out just in time.
Within minutes of the fire starting, the living room was completely gutted and the rest of the two-storey building severely damaged.
The owner of the house is said to be Zafar Iqbal, who owns a taxi firm in Sowerby Bridge.
Shocked neighbours said they woke up this morning to find smoke filling their homes.
Mick Lythgow, crew manager of Halifax fire station, said: "It was a very serious fire.
"The family were lucky to get out and were left very shocked especially when it began to sink in.
"If they hadn't been alerted by a smoke alarm it could have been a very different story."
Two pumps from Halifax attended and bought the blaze under control in 10 minutes.
Police were guarding the scene for most of today.
