A PLANNING inspector has demolished plans by developers to replace a large Victorian house with a block of 14 flats.
According to the inspector, it would seriously harm the living conditions of a nearby house and the flats would lack any outdoor space for residents.

SMC Developments Ltd, of Leeds, wanted to pull down Ashleigh, in Savile Road, Halifax, which stands immediately opposite Savile House, a home for the elderly.

Calderdale Council turned down the scheme and an appeal was made to the planning inspector.

Inspector Mel Middleton dismissed it on the grounds the three-storey block of flats would adversely affect living conditions at Fernbank.

The developers had originally planned to build the flats out of buff brick but later agreed to use artificial ashlar stone.

"I saw a number of examples of the use of artificial stone in this area," said Mr Middleton. "In my opinion none of them made a positive contribution to the area's character and appearance," he said.

The property which stands there is missing half its roof - the developers are obviously allowing it to fall into disrepair so they have an excuse to knock it down! Its a very grand building which should be transformed back into its former glory.

I walk past that house a few times a day, it was only a few months back it was an absolutley gorgeous example of a Victorian villa.

Waits for an "unexpected fire" to happen.
