While I take no pleasure in anyone losing their job in the current economic climate, I nevertheless welcome the news that Labour's Lord Adonis has been moved from the Department of Children, Schools and Families.
Lord Adonis has been the driving f
orce behind the widely-opposed academies programme. He was recently praised by the Tory Party for his policies, and even offered a post in a future Cameron government.
There are now over 100 academies open across England, and plans in Calderdale to support one in North Halifax, closing a successful school, Holy Trinity. Academies are schools that have been handed over to businesses, religious groups and charities, with no local accountability.
Academies are opposed by the Lib Dems in Calderdale, teacher unions and the Trade Union Congress.
We Lib Dems believe there is little evidence that academies are leading to an improved education system. We therefore believe that the decision to move Lord Adonis should be matched by a moratorium on the academy programme here in Calderdale, combined with an inquiry into the impact of academies on the local education system in West Yorkshire.
