Happy Olympics hid the real news

I THINK most people would agree that the achievements of the British Olympians in Beijing were fantastic and we should be proud of them.
However, I can't help thinking that perhaps slightly more important issues are being ignored by the media.
It might well be to the surprise and shock of many people to learn that the United Nations has said that there is convincing evidence that an American NATO air strike in Afghanistan killed 90 civilians, 60 of whom were children.
Unfortunately, this very disturbing news has been largely ignored by the press in favour of Olympic exploits and other "happier news".
Whilst the good people of Mansfield and other towns celebrated the homecoming of their Olympic athletes, it seems that many poor unfortunates in Afghanistan were burying what was left of their children. Although it is right that we celebrate our Olympic success. I think that the media should make a little more effort in reporting news of more fundamental importance, thereby helping us to keep things in perspective.
