I HAVE never before read such a contradictory letter as that of Europhile Brian Hanwell (Your say, September 29).

His rant rubbishes democracy, from company ex
ecutives to Calderdale Council, including the statement: "There is much disappointment with our democratic methods."

He then contradicts himself with the statement: "I believe in a democratically elected European Government."

Either he talks to suit his argument or he doesn't know his own mind.

FOR the second time in recent weeks Europhile Brian Hanwell (Your say, September 29, "US of Europe – despite Julie Andrews shock") is advocating a European super-state to solve our drunken job culture, presumably by osmosis.

It doesn't seem to have registered with him that our drunken job culture has occurred despite our EU membership. Brian naivety knows no bounds.

Maybe so Barry, but a united Europe doesn't necessarily come through a European Union.

Good to see you back by the way :)

Why thanks Pete, it's a shame I have been so busy of late as I do miss the utter guff the passes for issues around these parts.

United Europe is coming whether we like it or not. So we best plan accordingly. The opposition to a United Europe is weak at best, it's all pride without reason.

united europe is no good for us Barry.

our lot are more interested in united states.

My opposition doesn't come from pride Barry (i have precious little), it's more the sheer corruption of the whole foul jamboree.

It pains me to agree, but you are right. They want the EU and no amount of protest will change their mind. If only Jacques Chirac et al read the Courier, they'd know just how disaffected some stubborn Englishmen were. That'd make them think again.

I like the idea of Europe.

It needs reform though (It's very wasteful)

We should work towards a closer Europe. I suggest it's time we had a common European language....English

Arrr matey (PiratePete).

Corruption is a problem everywhere, even this country has its share, of course much less than some of those dirty Euros of course (although you already know this). Stubborn is not always a bad thing. I could be completely wrong, but I can have my dreams of 'The Federal Republic of Europe'!

We all have our dreams Barry. If i allow you your dream of a Federal Republic of Europe, will you let me have that one where i'm ploughing the Cheeky Girls?
