WHY is it the Englishman and woman cannot call themselves English on the census form rather than British?

A Scotsman calls himself a Scotsman, a Welshman calls himself Welsh and an Irishman calls himself Irish?

I don't think anyone has a problem with that M Walters but I would have a problem if the option to call myself British was removed as an option as would a large number of people of mixed English/Welsh/Scotish decent who cannot pin there colours to any of the regions of the UK

Briganetes - From the point of view of someone who is British with and English/Scottish background so cannot claim to be English or Scottish what does worry people like me about some of the comments made when we have this debate is that one day we may not be welcome in either England and Scotland if the two nations go there own way which raises the issue of ethnic cleansing that has taken part in other parts of Europe leaving people like me stateless and sometimes dead, which I think is why this is such a contentious issue as people like me could become stateless.

Just cut them all loose I say, the bulk of population lives in England as do the taxpayers so I'm sure we can manage without them somehow....
