By-election will achieve nothing

I WAS interested to read Donald Leach's letter about David Davis's resignation and its effect on the Tory Party ("Davis move just beggars belief", Your say, June 25).
I must confess to being baffled by Mr Davis's action, particularly since the sham by-election will achieve nothing – and cost £96,000.
I must, however, disagree with Mr Leach's fulsome support for David Cameron, who, since he was elected as Conservative Party leader, has done nothing to put forward policies which a Govern- ment led by him would enact.
The only "policy" statement was that announced at last year's conference with regard to lifting the inheritance tax threshold to £1 million.
Perhaps Mr Leach could tell me what else has he done – apart from looking pretty like Mr Leach's former idol, Teflon Tony Blair!
At the moment opinion polls show a healthy Tory lead – but is this because of support for the Conservatives or despair at the Brown-led Labour Government?
