And though the visitors were missing Brad Attwood, Mark Boothroyd and Mick Shaw from last week's side which performed heroics to beat table toppers York Acorn, they had more than enough quality to ease to a convincing National Conference Premier Divi
sion victory.
It did not take Siddal long to breach the home defence with the impressive Tom Gafney, making his first team debut, producing a lovely 30 yard solo run round a static Mayfield back line which ended with him sidestepping the full back and touching down to give his side the lead after just four minutes, Shaun Garrod converting.
But the lead only lasted two minutes as poor defending allowed Mayfield's loose forward Ryan Douglas to scamper over, Eric Johnson adding the extras.
However, in the 10th minute Garrod took the initiative and dummied his way over before converting his own try to give his side a 12-6 lead.
It soon got even better as from the restart, Gary Lewis drove the ball back towards the hosts' line and a six man move resulted in Gareth Blackburn diving over in the corner for an unconverted try.
In the 16th minute, the lead was further extended when Steven Hope barged his way over in the opposite corner, though the conversion again was not kicked.
On a rare excursion into Siddal's 25, Mayfield substitute Scott Frost crossed to reduce the arrears after an outrageous overhead pass from team mate Douglas, Johnson adding the conversion.
But five minutes before the interval, Garrod again sidestepped the home defence and waltzed under the posts, converting himself to give his side a 26-12 half time lead.
Four minutes after the restart, good work from inside the visiting 25 resulted in Hope racing 60 yards to score under the posts, Garrod again kicking the conversion.
With the game won, Siddal were now throwing the ball about, and it wasn't long before they were over the whitewash again, Lee Gudor diving over for a well taken try which Garrod improved.
The visitors were then reduced to 11 men when the referee adjudged Hope to have kicked out in the tackle and sinbinned him, with Lewis then following him into the sinbin for questioning the decision.
With a two man advantage, Mayfield grabbed two quick tries through Chris Highton and Grant Bithel, which were both converted to bring the score to 38-24.
But Garrod had the last laugh, crowning a man of the match performance with the final try to complete a win which was satisfying despite Siddal never hitting last week's heights.
