Rugby League - Siddal B 52 Ovenden A 10: Batley try rounds off fine Siddal final display
Siddal B had a 38-point start in Tuesday's Halifax Handicap Cup final but didn't need it as they finished the season in style with a 14-10 success on the night.
In a robust encounter, Ovenden stared the brighter but handling errors cost them the chance of early points. Steve Taylor was using all his experience and Bob Saunders and Eric Marsh were prominent.
Siddal looked edged and a little weary after Saturday's Supplementary Cup win over Halifax Irish and it needed last ditch tackles from Darren Armstrong and Carl Gregg to keep out Ovenden's Sean Dyson and Mark Bailey.
As Siddal began to settle, Pete Howard put Liam Green away on a storming run and when Ovenden were penalised for holding down Jason Barron made it 2-0.
Another Green break shortly after was carried on by George Parkinson but the final pass went to ground. However, Barron kicked a second penalty.
Ovenden replied with a well worked try from Taylor, who added the goal for a 6-4 lead, and only resolute defence from Mark Halford, Nick Langhorn and Paul Simpson prevented them from adding to their tally before half time.
Martin Thompson and Ian Muirhead went close for Siddal before Aaron McLaughlin cashed in on good approach work by Taylor and Dean McCallion.
At 10-4, Ovenden must have hoped to pull away from the team three divisions below them but the introduction of Craig Turner provided Siddal with more structure and with strong runs from Vernon McGinnis and Mark Dinsmore, Siddal clawed their way back in to the game.
A Barron penalty made it 10-6 and added another two points as Andy Whiteley and Paul Simpson rattled Ovenden with big hits.
Taylor was held up over the line by a superb Gregg tackle and at the end other Muirhead suffered a similar fate at the hands of Dave Hebblewhite.
Fullback Barron then helped round things off when he broke from inside his own half and the supporting Matty Batley finished in style with Barron converting.
