A QUALITY display by Halifax boxer Liam Walsh brought him a superb victory against a more experienced opponent in a promotion at Whitehaven on Friday.
The 25-year-old, who now boxes out of the Cleckheaton club, is known for his aggressive, all action style, but on this occasion, he adopted a more patient, defensive strategy against durable Welshman Darren Jones, who has had 21 previous bouts and lost just seven.
And the change of tack paid off handsomely as Walsh frustrated his opponent and carved out a fully deserved majority decision over the four two-minute rounds of the 69kg contest.
"Liam's known for going forward but I asked him to change his style, box more defensively and just try to pick him off and he showed he could do it," said trainer Keith Tate.
Walsh is improving all the time and his next target is the National Novice Championships which take place at the Halifax Boxing Club on November 16.
Walsh is set to enter the Under 20 Bouts category and is sure of huge support as he competes in his home town.
