Wind can't blow Union off course

A WELL executed team effort from a buoyant Halifax and Huddersfield side saw them deservedly capture their first Inter Union win of the season on Sunday.
Chris Mear's men swept aside the challenge of the Teeside Union at Bradley Hall and defied ferocious winds to ease to a win which gets them right back on track after disappointing defeats in their tough opening two fixtures against Bradford and Leeds.
That strong wind meant shot making was always going to be very difficult as on some occasions the ball moved up to 20 feet after appearing to stop, with putting also proving very tough on the slick Bradley Hall greens, and indeed the first hole, a gentle 355 yard par four, was playing a full-blooded drive and six iron.
But a delighted Mear was full of praise for the way his side managed to come to terms with the elements and their opponents.
"It really was very difficult, probably as difficult as I have ever seen it," said Mear.
"But once we got the foursomes completed, it was in the interest of both sides to carry on and thankfully we did superbly to clinch a deserved win.
"I was especially pleased with Andy Shaw, Iain Powell and Edward Battye who got us off to such a good start in both the morning and afternoon, and Frank Greaves did superbly to battle to that singles win in those conditions."
After getting off on the right foot in the morning foursomes with a comfortable win for the opening pairing of Hebden Bridge man Powell and home player Shaw, there was a setback when Ben Crowther and Edward Battye went down to the in-form Simon Calvert and Wayne Trotter and the West End pairing of the seasoned Greaves and youngster Sam Bridges also lost, but the next three matches all went the way of the Halifax and Huddersfield Union leaving the score at 8-4 going into the afternoon singles.
When the singles began, Shaw, Powell and Battye all built up healthy leads in the opening three games to put the home side in the driving seat.
Shaw needed a sweet two iron to the 158 yard par three 18th hole to ensure his one hole victory, but Powell and Battye completed comfortable wins.
Teesside closed the gap when Crowther and Bridges went down but fine wins by Greaves and Frazer Scholefield clinched victory with five games still out on the course.
Teesside revived with a trio of consolation wins but late triumphs by in-form Fixby pair Jared Ellison and Danny Stocchero put the icing on the victory cake and put the team in good heart for the next match against the East Riding at Driffield on Sunday, July 13.
