Whitworth edged out in repeat final

FOR the second successive year, Andy Whitworth's bid to add to his amazing record of 10 Halifax and Huddersfield Union Individual Matchplay Championships was ended at the very last hurdle by Fixby ace Richard Broadley.
After last year's epic duel, Whitworth set up a chance of revenge when he won through to the final by seeing off West End's Sam Bridges in the last four on Saturday at Halifax GC, with Broadley overcoming a brave challenge by Ryburn's Chris Rudd.
The repeat final showdown was delayed by an hour on Sunday as a morning mist hung over the Ogden course, but as it lifted, so did Broadley's hopes as he stormed into an early lead.
And Bradley Hall man Whitworth could do little to arrest the slide as the Fixby player, who lives at Rastrick and works in Ovenden, extended his advantage and completed the first 18 holes with a five hole advantage.
That was a mountain to climb in itself, but the task became even tougher for Whitworth as he went seven down in the early stages of the second round.
But the former champion somehow summoned up his reserves of strength for a belated revival in which he fought back to just two down.
However, the task ultimately proved just beyond Whitworth and Broadley regained control to ease home by a 4&3 margin to lift the BM Howarth Chartered Accountants sponsored trophy for the second successive year and the third occasion in all, Broadley having also triumphed in 2004.
The Junior Matchplay Championship Final was played on the same day at the same venue, and it was Elland GC's Nicholas Marsh who took the honours with a convincing victory over Lewis Howell of Willow Valley.
The 13-year-old, who plays off five, was three up after the morning round and went on to win 7&6.
Interestingly, Marsh lives for eight months of the year with his parents in Mauritius, where his father David, a PGA member, is general manager at the Le Touessrok golf complex.
