Knowing your yardages is vital.
It can be extremely frustrating to hit a good shot straight at the pin only to see it fly over the green or come up short.
Most amateurs come up short with approach shots due to picking their best ever strike to that distance. What you should go on is your average distance for each club.
The easiest way to do this is go to the practice ground with a six iron and hit 20 balls towards a target.
Now take away any complete mis-hits and very good strikes and you should be left with a nice grouping which will give you your average distance.
You can now work 10 yards either way for each club. For example if your average with a 6 iron is 160 yards then a 7 iron would be 150 and so on.
