A SUPERB three under par 67 by Direct Golf's Chris Mowl earned him a deserved victory in Crow Nest Park GC's inaugural Scratch Open last week.
Mowl defied difficult conditions caused by persistent rain to lift the new Everitt Cup, posting a score just one shot outside the course record to edge out in form home player Steve Smith and Queensbury's Karl Smith.
Devised by Crow Nest Park scratch team captain Dean Wilson and club captain Raj Panesar, the competition is sponsored by the club's popular resident PGA professional Paul Everitt, who has held the post since the club opened in 1995.
The competition came during a busy week at the Hove Edge club which also hosted its annual Seniors Open which attracted a strong entry and was won by South Leeds GC pair Nigel Stringer and Barry Priestley.
In addition, the 36 hole Crow Nest Cup was also staged last week and saw a nailbiting finish with Rob Gee edging out Steve Smith at the fifth hole of a play off after an epic contest to take the club's most prestigious trophy.
Smith headed a large field after the first day, equalling the course record to lead by four shots from Gee and Nicky Day, but back came Gee on day two to tie the scores and force that play off.
The players could still not be separated after four extra holes but Gee's birdie at the fifth additional hole finally settled it in a finish described by club captain Panesar at the presentation as the most exciting ever in a competition at the club.
The week also saw Ruth Wilson win her first ever competition by landing the ladies' medal with an excellent 76 in wet and miserable conditions.
The previous week Michael Green won the annual Thompson Shield which is played in memory of Calder Valley MP Sir Donald Thompson.
There was also success elsewhere for Crow Nest Park member John Haverstock, the Rastrick based player winning through to the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Rabbit Association singles knock out final by beating George Pickles of Lightcliffe 4 & 3 at Dewsbury District GC.
The final takes place at Crow Nest Park on Sunday, September 14.
