ONE of the youngest sides ever to represent the Halifax and Huddersfield Union bids for its first win of the season against the Teesside Union at Bradley Hall on Sunday.
But as non playing captain Chris Mear has pointed out, while the average age may be low, this is a far from inexperienced side and he is optimistic it has the ability to pull off a victory which will hopefully kick start the season.
"It's certainly a very young side but most of them have already made quite a number of appearances and I have no doubts about their ability," said Mear.
His selection was hampered by the fact that experienced home player Jim Fairhurst is unavailable due to holidays.
Fixby's Richard Broadley, who has struggled to hit top form in recent weeks, is also absent for the same reason while Ogden man Stephen Sweeney has work commitments.
But Mear has drafted in another home club player in the form of young Andy Appleyard and has called up two other capable replacements in Edward Battye of Dewsbury District and Frazer Scholefield of Fixby.
Mear pointed out that Scholefield had been playing very well and his handicap had now been reduced to one and he was confident the 2006 Union stroke play champion would be a big asset.
Both Appleyard, Scholefield and Fixby's in form Danny Stocchero complete their six matches for the Inter Union side when they play on Sunday and therefore will be awarded their Union colours.
With last year's corresponding fixture being cancelled because of bad weather, it is some time since the two sides have met and Mear admitted Teesside are something of an unknown quantity, but he is hopeful the blend of youth and experience will see his side home.
"We don't know too much about their line up but I expect they will have the usual stalwarts such as Andy Gray in the ranks and as they have Teesside and the Durham area to call on they will be a decent side," he said.
The first two fixtures this term against Leeds and Bradford ended in defeat and followed similar patterns with the morning foursomes very tight but reverses in the early stages of the afternoon singles proving costly.
Mear has pondered a change in the order to combat the problem but was keeping his plans under wraps until Sunday, when the foursomes matches start at 10am with the singles starting at 2pm. Any support would be very welcome.
