A SCORCHING second round 70 by Andy Whitwothe earned him the honours in Bradley Hall's Scratch Cup on Saturday.
Though the course was still heavy after the recent rain, preferred lies were not in operation, but that did not prevent some consistently good scoring, with +1 man Andy Shaw setting the early pace in the 36 hole competition with a gross 70.

He was
closely followed by Martin Cockcroft (2) with 72 and Paul Taylor (2) with 73 and scratch man Jim Fairhurst with 74, with Whitworth stating that he was out of contention after he carded a gross 75.

In the handicap competition, Chris Southern (6) and Dean Alexis (7) were leaders with net 69s with Cockcroft a shot behind and James Dale (6), Taylor, Paul Buckley (7) and Shaw a further shot back.

But back roared Whitworth with that second round 70 for a two round total of 145, pipping Shaw who blew his chances by dropping three shots on the par five 16th.

Whitworth was presented with the trophy by good friend and playing partner Taylor as club captain Michael White was unavailable due to work commitments.

In the accompanying 'Single Figure' competition, a second round net 69 for a 36 hole total of level par 136 was sufficient to land Buckley the trophy with Ian Hallett (5), who also carded a net 69 in the second round, runner up on 142 alongside Carl Gillespie (6).
