When Mozza met Malcolm

The figure shot across the pitch from a standing start.
There was a sickening collision with one of the opposition's leading – and biggest players – and we all held our breath…..
Luckily, both got to their feet unharmed.
They were Widnes second rower Paul Moriarty – and Halifax physio Guy Rumbold!
That was our first glimpse of "Mozza" and was in 1993.
We didn't realise just over a year later, in July 1994, he'd become a Halifax player.
If ever a player was justified about feeling bitter towards a coach (apart from Grant Anderson in exactly the same circumstances) it was Moriarty.
Widnes were in financial meltdown.
Most of the team were up for grabs and Fax coach Malcolm Reilly's main target was scrum half Bobbie Goulding. He needed a number seven after Paul Bishop had skipped off to Australia and Goulding fitted the bill.
The trouble was that a bidding war ensued with St Helens which they won but had to pay a massive price for the privilege.
Reilly was also alerted that Moriarty was on his way out of Naughton Park.
The coach was a big believer in the theorem that a good big player will always see off a good little one and Moriarty was huge!
His agent was David McKnight who ran an agency called "Premier Crew" and he was taking Moriarty on a tour of West Yorkshire clubs.
First scheduled stop was Thrum Hall, then Odsal, perhaps Wheldon Road.
Reilly's strategy was to persuade him to sign for Halifax before he allowed him to leave and go on the next part of the "road trip".
Whether or not he dangled the carrot of a Great Britain cap in front of the Welshman is debatable; Reilly was also the national team boss at the time and there were clauses in the deal relating to international honours.
Be that as it may, by the time 5pm arrived the player had put pen to paper and the coach was a big factor in that decision.
A month later though, Reilly failed to turn up for training one Friday night which was very uncharacteristic.
We assumed he was on a scouting trip but he was really in Hong Kong being interviewed by videolink by Newcastle Knights.
Another week and he was gone, leaving the players he'd signed high and dry.
It didn't stop Moriarty from becoming European Player of the Year in 1995 though.
One last thought.
As McKnight left Thrum Hall he asked, seeing as Goulding was going to Saints, if Halifax were interested in an 18-year-old he was bringing over from New Zealand.
"No thanks, we want an experienced player," was the response.
And so Robbie Paul went to Bradford.

Someone once described Paul Rowley as a ferret during his time with Fax.
Well, he was certainly nosing around before last Thursday night's game.
"Have you lot signed Mark Gleeson?" he was overheard to ask several people.
This of course was denied as the capture of the Warrington hooker was still deemed to be secret.
"Well, I'm sure I've just seen him in Richard Varkulis' car on the motorway…" muttered the former Halifax number nine.
